The Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Cuba is pleased to invite you to attend the first Congress “BioProcess Cuba”. The scientific event will be held from February 20th to 24th, 2017, in the exciting city of Camagüey.  The main objective is to bring together scientists, specialists, engineers, academics and students whose work is related to the design of biotechnological processes.

Invited speaker: Prem Warrior

Chief Operating Officer, Valagro SpA, Italy

Prem joined Valagro as a Member of the Board of Valagro S.p.A., Italy in 2012 and is currently the Chief Operating Officer responsible for the global operations of the R&D, Marketing, Business development and Sales teams. Prior to joining Valagro, he was a Senior Regional Advisor on the Agricultural Development team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle advancing the foundation’s partnerships in South Asia. He concurrently served as a Senior Program Officer and the Team Leader for the Postharvest & Markets group at the Gates foundation. While at the Foundation, he managed a portfolio of grants in the crop management area including biological nitrogen fixation, integrated pest management, evaluation of crop protection products including seed treatment products, as well as managing a group of postharvest & markets in the Access & Markets team. Prior to joining the foundation, Prem was in an executive leadership role managing technology and directing global programs in agricultural research, formulations, and technology assessments at Abbott Laboratories and Valent BioSciences Corporation. Prem has a PhD in Plant pathology/Nematology and an MBA in general business. He has published more than 70 scientific peer-reviewed publications, has over 30 patents issued and more than 50 patents pending and has been associated with the discovery and development of several agricultural products including insecticide, nematicide and plant growth regulators.

Invited speaker: Pete Gagnon Ph.D.

CSO, Validated Biosystems

Pete Gagnon is an internationally recognized expert, innovator, and educator in purification of biologics, including recombinant proteins, viruses, and DNA plasmids. He is best known for his prolific writing and presentation skills, exemplified by his book Purification Tools for Monoclonal Antibodies, chapters in seven other books, nearly a hundred journal and trade publications, dozens of patents, plus countless conference presentations describing important innovations in the field. He is a member of the Editorial Boards for Bioprocess International and Genetic Engineering News, as well as a frequent guest editor and reviewer for top journals such as the Journal of Chromatography. He is also a Scientific Advisor for major international conferences, including the Bioprocess International conferences in the United States, and the biannual Monolith conferences in Europe. Following a 25-year career as Chief Scientific Officer of Validated Biosystems, an international consulting firm specialized in hands-on development of industrial purification procedures, he worked with the Singaporean Agency for Science and Technology to help establish Singapore as a major center of bioprocessing excellence in Asia. He subsequently served as Vice President of Process Sciences for Peregrine Pharmaceuticals in Southern California and has recently returned to his consulting roots at Validated Biosystems. In addition to his technical skills, he speaks passable Spanish.

Invited speaker: Aleš Podgornik Ph.D.

Aleš PodgornikAleš Podgornik, Ph.D., is by profession chemical engineer and has worked for 20 years in the field of biochemical engineering, especially in the downstream processing of macromolecules. He worked as CSO and R&D head for the companies BIA and BIA Separations for more than a decade. Currently, he is a professor of chemical engineering on Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, as well as Head of bioprocessing technologies in COBIK. His research interest is about biochromatography related to development and application of monolithic chromatographic stationary phases. He has published over 90 papers, 10 book chapters and holds several national and international patents. He was awarded in 2001 with Jožef Stefan Golden Emblem Prize for outstanding doctoral dissertation and in 2005 with Zois award for implementation of scientific achievements.

Invited speaker: Parrish M. Galliher Ph.D.

Chief Technology Officer, Upstream. GE Healthcare Life Sciences. 

Mr. Galliher earned his BA in Biology at Boston University (1975) and his MS in Biochemical Engineering at MIT (1981).   Mr. Galliher joined Biogen, Inc. in 1981 where he was responsible for the design, commissioning and management of Biogen’s first biomanufacturing facilities for both E.coli and mammalian cell manufacturing. As Director of Process Engineering, he led the team responsible for startup, initial validation and commissioning of Biogen’s Avonex® manufacturing facility, later licensed by the FDA in 1996.

In December 2002, Mr. Galliher became Founder, President, and CEO of Xcellerex, an advanced technology contract biomanufacturing and disposable manufacturing systems company. In December 2004, Mr. Galliher transitioned to Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Xcellerex, Inc.  As Principal Investigator, Mr. Galliher has led Xcellerex’s $19 M US Gov’t DoD contract for the “Accelerated Manufacture of Pharmaceuticals Program” (AMP), awarded in 2007 and continued through completion of Phase 2 Live Fire Test in 2009. Mr. Galliher is co- inventor on numerous patents in the field of biomanufacturing. In 2012 he received the BioProcess International Award as “Thought Leader of the Decade” in the Upstream Processing category. He currently holds the role of Chief Technology Officer at GE Healthcare for the Upstream Bioprocessing business.

Invited speaker: Gregor Cevc Ph.D.

Gregor Cevc Ph.D., was confirmed as invited speaker at the symposium "New Drug delivery formulation for human and veterinary products". For BioProcess Cuba 2017 will be a pleasure to have the presence of this personality. Gregor Cevc has many publications that reflect his scientific work, grouped in more than 130 scientific articles, 7 chapters books and one book (ResearchGate reports more than  8790 citations). In the actuality is the Chairman of The Advanced Treatments Institute (Munich, Germany).
